This position is under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology.  The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine and include: teaching medical students, house staff, paramedical personnel and the regional medical community; providing clinical care to patients of the University Hospital and Clinics, and affiliated hospitals and clinics; engaging in public service through consultative activities with non-university groups as approved by the Department Chair.  Specific duties include caring for comprehensive ophthalmology patients and providing staffing to residents who care for such patients.  Clinical practice is largely expected to focus on comprehensive ophthalmology at CEI’s satellite location in Astoria, Oregon. 

The duties of this position include:  Provide comprehensive genetic counseling services to individuals and families seen in the Ophthalmic Genetics, Retinoblastoma Clinics and other ophthalmic spcialities. Services include coordination of appropriate clinical and research genetic testing options.    Performs requirements for Staff Members as outlined in Compliance Roles and Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics.    Carry out job responsibilities in an ethical, effective, and professional manner.  Report potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlines in the Code of Conduct.   Model ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance, and personal integrity.  Understand and comply with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, applicable rules, regulations, etc.  Documents in medical record all patient care services delivered in support of third party bills.  Processes billings for hospital and clinic charges in accordance with HCFA, Medicaid, Champus and all commercial and managed care carriers.  Assures departmental compliance with all applicable third party payer regulations and contracts.  Adheres to all Casey Eye Institute Service Excellence standards and expectations and attends all related mandatory training programs.   Track, document, and communicate genetic test results to patients and health care providers.   Obtain and review medical and family histories of scheduled patients prior to clinic and prepare a summary for the physicians.   Screen and answer patient and health care provider inquiries as they relate to genetic counseling or genetic testing services.   Maintain updated patient education materials and disease resources. Assist with inherited retinal disease related research projects   including but not limited to obtaining patient consent, data collection, data entry, and preparation of manuscripts.  

Providing optometric eye care services and staffing support to General Ophthalmology and the Contact Lens Service at the Casey Eye Hood River and The Dalles satellite clinics. General Ophthalmology duties include support of general adult eye clinic.    Professional education: assist with professional education events and courses presented by ophthalmologists, optometrists and other allied health professionals.   Administrative tasks: complete required documentation such as care report forms; maintain patient records.

Conduct medical and vision evaluations of patients at Casey Eye Institute.  Duties include providing routine eye examinations, contact lens services, pre- and post-operative assessments of laser vision correction patients, prescribing glasses and performing related eye care services. Documents patient findings in the medical record per OHSU and CEI procedures and guidelines and communicates findings and recommendations to cornea ophthalmologists.  Serves as a resource for technician staff regarding patient refractive care and evaluation.   Assists with professional education events and courses presented by ophthalmologists, optometrists and other allied health professionals.  Completes required documentation such as case report forms; maintains patient records.

The duties of this position include: - Provide medical care independently in inpatient and outpatient setting to ophthalmology patients. - Communicate with attending physicians regarding a patient's condition, treatment plans, and urgent medical needs - Communicate with patients and family regarding their medical conditions, treatment plans, and their progress. Review labs and imaging as appropriate - Assure appropriate setting of care (ambulatory, inpatient, critical care, acute care) - Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in progress notes according to OHSU guidelines - Maintain communication with primary care providers and other individuals and agencies as appropriate - Provide preoperative H&P evaluations; coordination of ancillary services; promoting and maintaining health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials and counseling of patients and families; - Provide same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with Ophthalmology outpatient staff promoting a safe environment for patients and adhering to policies regarding patient care and confidentiality to support the mission and goals of OHSU - Assist in training newly hired Physician Assistants. - Attend and participate in Grand Rounds, OHSU conferences, lectures, national conferences, and other learning opportunities as available After appropriate proctoring, APPs will independently perform procedures to include: Administer topical and oral medications Biometry Contact lens fitting Evaluate and manage corneal abrasions Functional ocular measurements and tests Lensometry Measurement of intra-ocular pressure Ocular motility testing Refractometry Removal of uncomplicated extraocular foreign body (cornea, conjunctiva, eyelid) Routine eye examinations Slit lamp exam and stain for abrasion Tonometry Visual field testing

Specific duties:  The candidate will be expected to establish a high quality research program, establish collaborations as part of a collegial group of basic and clinical researchers, supervise a laboratory team, successfully apply for external grant support, publish manuscripts in high quality journals, and participate in occasional seminars, teaching and mentoring of interns.   Specific areas of research to be given highest priority would include:  1) Development of novel IRD disease models in rodents and primates or using human IPSCs; 2) Development of novel therapeutic agents for macular degeneration and IRDs including but not limited to: small molecule agents, gene augmentation, anti-sense oligonucleotides, gene editing and cell-based therapies.   The candidate would join a group of highly successful and collaborative researchers and clinician-scientists in the field of retinal disease.  The Casey Eye Institute has extraordinary facilities and resources for research in this area, including the Ophthalmic Genetics Division, a Clinical Trial center currently conducting a dozen IRD clinical trials, the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers that includes the pioneers in OCT and OCT angiography imaging, high level facilities for small animal research, and close collaboration with the Oregon National Primate Research Center which has state-of-the-art facilities for ophthalmic research in nonhuman primates and the availability of naturally-occurring and gene-edited IRD models.
