Department Overview

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) – Portland State University (PSU) School of Public Health (SPH) seeks candidates with strong training in statistics/biostatistics, or related areas, as well as excellent teaching and collaborative skills. This 12-month position will be at assistant professor level and the faculty member will primarily teach graduate level core biostatistics courses (1-2 per term), develop and teach elective biostatistics courses in a substantive topic, advise and mentor graduate students, as well as engage in scholarly activities and contribute to the shared governance of the School. The faculty member will also have the opportunity to develop a research program with a mixture of collaborative and independent research and/or participate in the Biostatistics & Design Program, OHSU’s core resource for biostatistics collaboration.


This position reports to (supervisor): Richard Johnson, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the incoming faculty will be part of the Biostatistics group within the SPH.

Function/Duties of Position

  1. Teach biostatistics courses at the masters and doctorate level within the School of Public Health
  2. Develop and teach an elective course in a substantive area of biostatistics that is consistent with the applicant’s expertise
  3. Advise and mentor graduate students
  4. Engage in scholarly and research activities
  5. Attend faculty meetings and advance the strategic goals of SPH and OHSU, contribute to the shared governance of the SPH, and engage in collegial activities in support of the SPH and OHSU’s mission.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD or equivalent degree in statistics, biostatistics or related discipline by the position start date.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Commitment to educational equity and promotion of diversity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching graduate level courses in biostatistics or related topic areas
  • Experience with online teaching, including online curriculum development and assessment
  • Experience providing mentoring and/or advising graduate students
  • Experience in collaborative biostatistics research and/or interest in conducting independently-funded research
