Department Overview

The Division of Pediatric Surgery directs a busy inpatient and outpatient clinical service both at Doernbecher Children¿s Hospital at OHSU and Randall Children¿s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. The pediatric surgery faculty members have special expertise in congenital abnormalities, single port surgery, antegrade continence enemas, congenital chest wall abnormalities, thoracoscopic repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, endoscopy (bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, peritoneoscopy, and thoracoscopy), surgery for cancerous and noncancerous tumors, trauma surgery, neonatal minimal access surgery, and fetal surgery. The Division of Pediatric Surgery is active in research and education, sponsoring a two-year ACGME accredited pediatric surgery fellowship program.

Function/Duties of Position

The appointee shall provide services assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the University's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.


Teaches support staff in their area of professional expertise. Teaching is done through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year and through teaching in the course of performing their own job by modeling best practices, mentoring trainees, guiding learning through delegating graduated and focused levels of responsibility. Takes a leadership role in education, through the residency or graduate student selection process, evaluation committee, education/curriculum committee, dissertation committee, or fellowship directorship. Must have a satisfactory or substantial record of accomplishment in teaching and be knowledgeable of and compliant with all applicable regulating bodies (e.g. ACGME competencies for clinical faculty, NIH guidelines for research faculty).


Provides an outstanding level of professional performance (e.g. quality of investigation for research faculty; quality of clinical care for clinical faculty). Professional performance is delivered in a manner that is compliant with the regulations and guidelines of all relevant regulating bodies (i.e. DNV, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, OHSUIRB, NIH, and all other state, federal, and institutional regulatory guidelines). Treats all patients, research subjects, trainees and co-workers with dignity and respect.


May maintain a program of scholarly research activity directed toward improved understanding for the causes, detection, and treatment of diseases. May engage in public service through consultative activities with OHSU and non-University groups as approved by the Division Chief. Will participate in departmental/hospital administration or leadership role as approved by the Division Chief. Must have a satisfactory record of accomplishments in scholarship and service.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in medicine, philosophy, or basic science (M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M., etc) & postdoctoral training; Satisfactory record of accomplishment in ALL of the following categories: teaching, scholarship and service;
