Department Overview

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a nationally prominent research university and Oregon’s only public academic health center. Gabriel Park is located in a community setting, single family and multi-family dwellings, across from Gabriel Park - a pleasant retreat in a community setting. We are near the neighborhoods of Hillsdale and Multnomah Village, and close to Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy. Gabriel Park, in a Portland suburb, is one of 4 family medicine teaching sites. Each site has approximately 12 residents. Residents stay at their site during their entire 4-year residency. The clinic cares for 13,000 patients, 70% commercial, 20% Medicare, 10% Medicaid.

Function/Duties of Position

The Medical Director of OHSU Family Medicine at Gabriel Park will lead overall direction and coordination of medical affairs and quality of care at the clinics. The Medical Director appointment runs concurrent with clinical practice. 

 

Primary Duties: (0.60FTE)

  • Provide full spectrum family medicine care.
  • Work collaboratively with full- and part-time faculty to maintain an active practice
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to developing the practice into a vibrant clinical and academic operation
  • Participate in continuing education, professional and faculty development and scholarship
  • See patients in their clinic and available for administrative duties/scholarship duties.  Expectations for number of patients seen per half-day will be commensurate with that of other faculty 
  • Document using the electronic health record and maintain complete and timely patient care documentation consistent with OHSU and Family Medicine policies and procedures
  • Be available for teaching activities including but not limited to resident precepting, student precepting, didactics and more
  • By mutual agreement between the Department and the physician, this position may include Inpatient Care (at OHSU and/or Tuality) with call duties being shared with the faculty inpatient call group.
  • Participate in seeing patients during expanded access hours in the clinic, including their share of evenings and weekends, and call coverage

Supplemental duties: (Total of 0.40FTE)

 

As Medical Director for Gabriel Park Clinic (0.25FTE):

  • Work with team to develop, implement, and evaluate health care service and quality improvement policies, plans, goals and objectives appropriate for the clinic
  • Create and achieve standards in medical excellence, encourage informal and formal continuing education, developing Quality Improvement initiatives, promote evidence-based practice and engage all providers in practice management activities
  • Monitor provider conformance to health care policies. Ensure a high quality residency experience for Family Medicine Residency
  • In conjunction with directors of patient care and outpatient, establish and monitor provider productivity standards and effective patient care, patient flow, continuity of care and referral patient care processes
  • Achieve cost-effective clinical operations and conformance with budget
  • Assist in development and monitoring of Gabriel Park Clinic budget
  • Supervise Gabriel Park Clinic clinical providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and mental health providers, including relevant faculty evaluations
  • Develop and oversee provider schedules, including clinic session templates, clinic call schedule, clinic/provider specific hospital rounds, coordination with Departmental Inpatient Service, and approval of provider leave requests
  • Serve as Clinic Compliance Officer by promoting quality of care and patient satisfaction and ensuring provider compliance with Gabriel Park Clinic policies, and legal and regulatory requirements of agencies such as CLIA, JCAHO, and local, state and federal governments
  • Lead the clinic provider group and facilitate regular provider meeting
  • Partner with Practice Manager to ensure a positive, caring and safe workplace by facilitating staff/provider conflict resolution, holding regular staff/provider meetings, and creating internal accountability among Gabriel Park Clinic providers and staff
  • Contribute towards a culture of responsiveness to customer/patient needs
  • Address and resolve issues related to medical risk management and patient complaints
  • Represent Gabriel Park Clinic in the community to provide community service and promote patient access to clinic services
  • Collaborate with other health and social service agency medical directors to meet patient needs and goals
  • Assure providers’ timely completion of electronic medical records, such as billing, and correspondence to other participants in the health care system in conjunction with established clinic and hospital policies
  • Define clinical appropriateness of medical equipment and medical supplies
  • Approve purchase requests for submission to annual budget process, and assure compliance with Gabriel Park Clinic policies regarding pharmaceutical and medication use

As Associate Residency Director for Gabriel Park Clinic (0.15FTE):

  • Maintain quality of supervision of learners (residents)
  • Assist Family Medicine Residency Program Director to develop and revise clinic-specific and residency-wide core curricula
  • Assure that learners complete a high quality clinic-based curriculum
  • Assist in integrating rotational responsibilities with clinic responsibilities, promote and maintain participation by faculty in the clinic curriculum, and facilitate participation of residents in Gabriel Park practice management as appropriate
  • Supervise Gabriel Park – Focused Faculty in their supervision, advising, and education of residents

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine degree and license to practice medicine in Oregon, or eligibility for license
  • Graduate medical education in an ACGME accredited Family Practice residency and
  • Board Certification in Family Practice
  • Staff privilege eligibility at OHSU Hospital
  • Previous work experience in primary care
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate high quality clinical programs through a multidisciplinary care team
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization, with accountability to multiple parties
  • Demonstrable strong interpersonal, oral and written communications, and team building skills
  • Demonstrable commitment, knowledge of, and sensitivity to cultural issues and health care needs of low-income, ethnic minority, and underserved populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous managerial experience in a health care organization (especially primary care practice)
  • Experience or background with resident administration and/or accreditation
  • Obstetrical Care
