Department Overview

The Division of Pediatric Surgery directs a busy inpatient and outpatient clinical service both at Doernbecher Children¿s Hospital at OHSU and Randall Children¿s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. The pediatric surgery faculty members have special expertise in congenital abnormalities, single port surgery, antegrade continence enemas, congenital chest wall abnormalities, thoracoscopic repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, endoscopy (bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, peritoneoscopy, and thoracoscopy), surgery for cancerous and noncancerous tumors, trauma surgery, neonatal minimal access surgery, and fetal surgery. The Division of Pediatric Surgery is active in research and education, sponsoring a two-year ACGME accredited pediatric surgery fellowship program.

 

The purpose of this position is to coordinate and support the needs of inpatient and clinical support operations for the Division of Pediatric Surgery. The NP/PA works in close partnership with team of physicians, advanced-practice providers, RNs, CMAs, surgical residents and hospital personnel to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The NP/PA works to assure a smooth transition of patient care and education between the inpatient and outpatient arenas in order to decrease length of stay, improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. The NP/PA works in conjunction with the Division Chief, faculty, RN, surgical residents, Division Manager, division staff and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the University’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service and the Department’s/Hospital’s goal of providing effective, efficient care. The NP/PA is credentialed by the Medical Board of OHSU to practice in the hospital setting and to perform procedures as authorized by the medical board and within the scope specified by the respective licensing board.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with faculty physicians and residents to provide excellent clinical care and customer service.
  • Work to assure a smooth transition of patient care and education between inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Provide care and follow-up to patients on the service. Includes, but not limited to preoperative and post-operative care, participation in rounds with faculty and residents, formulating care plans, charting clinical orders and progress notes, supervising and implementing timely discharges.
  • Provide consults to other pediatric services and the Emergency Department
  • Assist residents, faculty, and staff in continuous quality improvement and decreasing length of stay.
  • Offer independent clinics and perform procedures as authorized by the medical board and within the scope specified by the respective licensing board. 
  • Completes timely and accurate documentation in Epic with an awareness of reimbursement issues. 
  • Communicate to all referring providers and primary care practitioners as needed. 

Patient Education

  • Participate in patient education in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
  • Preoperative and post-operative education.
  • Clarification of the medical plan of care and assisting the team to assure all communication loops are closed.
  • Providing telephone advice and follow-up phone calls as needed regarding hospitalization and/or clinic visits. 

Teaching 

  • Ongoing orientation of surgical residents to the hospital and management of pediatric surgical patients. 
  • Participate in teaching conferences, rounds, and the education of medical students, PA and NP students, residents, fellows, and nursing staff. 

Professional Development through attendance and/or participation at national/regional conferences. 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

  • Ability to work as a team member in an interdisciplinary setting.

  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills in verbal, written, and electronic media.

  • Computer/word processing skills

  • Board Certicication,

  • Current Oregon NP or PA License, Prescriptive authority/DEA licensure

  • NP candidates must have acute care certification 

Preferred Qualifications

  • >2 years experience in inpatient Pediatrics or Med-Surg prefered, but new graduates encourtaged to apply
  • Epic electronic medical record system
  • PALS

Additional Details

Varies 07:00-1900 Monday-Friday. May be required to work off shift hours, attending early morning meetings, rounds, or conferences, as decided by clinical needs of the specialty.

 

May require additional skills to be acquired during the probationary period to adequately care for the specified patient population. Requires prioritization of multiple projects, activities, and assignments. Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations. May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation. May be required to attend out of town conferences according. May be exposed to body fluids, tissue, possible radiation exposure, and infectious processes. Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed. Able to utilize all patient care equipment and office equipment within work area.
