The Department of Radiation Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) seeks a board-certified/eligible Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate) to join our faculty team.

 

This position offers a unique opportunity to specialize in Central Nervous System (CNS) focused radiation oncology and palliative care within the collaborative environment of Oregon’s only academic medical center.

 

The appointee will provide high-quality, evidence-based oncology care with a specialized focus on central nervous system (CNS) malignancies, inpatient radiation oncology consult services, and palliative patient management.

 

The APP will work closely with neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, and palliative care teams to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with CNS tumors. Approximately 100% of the APP’s effort will be dedicated to clinical care and academic activities in the Department of Radiation Medicine, with a portion of this time protected for academic pursuits such as research, education, and program development.

 

Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts per week with one weekday off. This role also includes occasional travel to the South Waterfront clinics and may involve performing inpatient consultations.

Critical Care:

• Triage, evaluate, and manage patients with primary and metastatic CNS tumors in the ambulatory setting, coordinating appropriate diagnostic work ups (e.g. imaging studies, lumbar punctures, neurocognitive assessments) necessary for radiation oncologic management.
• Assist the physicians in developing and implementing individualized radiation therapy plans in collaboration with neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and other supportive care teams.
• Assess and manage symptoms related to cancer and radiation therapy – such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and neurological deficits – and deliver palliative radiation treatments for symptom relief.
• Collaborate with palliative care specialists, social workers, and chaplaincy services to address holistic patient and family needs during treatment.
• Assist attending radiation oncologists with treatment simulation, planning review, on-treatment patient visits, and follow-up assessments.
• Accurately document patient encounters, treatment summaries, and care plans in the electronic medical record, ensuring compliance with departmental protocols and all regulatory requirements.
• Provide timely inpatient consultation for hospitalized patients requiring radiation oncology evaluation. This includes performing comprehensive history and physical examinations, ordering and interpreting relevant diagnostic tests, and formulating management recommendations in consultation with faculty physicians.
• Collaborate with the inpatient care team to facilitate efficient transitions of care between the hospital, outpatient clinic, and palliative care settings.
• Work with hospital staff to coordinate discharge planning and ensure continuity of care and follow-up for patients moving between care environments.
• See and manage patients in the post-treatment monitoring and survivorship arenas with the appropriate imaging and in consultation with neurosurgery and neuro-oncology services.

Leadership and Collaboration: 

• Participate actively in multidisciplinary team activities to improve patient care. This includes attending and contributing to the weekly CNS tumor board, palliative care rounds, and other relevant tumor-specific conferences. Serve as a liaison between Radiation Medicine and referring specialties (e.g. Medical Oncology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology) to promote coordinated, patient-centered care. Coordinate treatment plans with the broader oncology team, including nursing staff, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, and other ancillary personnel, to ensure integrated service delivery.
• Provide education and mentorship within the department. Assist with supervising and teaching radiation oncology residents, medical students, and APP trainees during their rotations. Develop and deliver didactic sessions on topics such as CNS radiation oncology techniques and palliative care principles. Mentor junior APPs, nursing staff, and other learners in clinical best practices and professional development.
• Engage in quality improvement and research initiatives. Contribute to departmental quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing CNS tumor treatment protocols, improving inpatient consult service efficiency, and expanding palliative radiation services. Participate in clinical research efforts by aiding in protocol development, patient accrual to trials, and data collection/ analysis. The APP may collaborate on scholarly outputs and present findings at departmental meetings, institutional symposia, or national conferences, as opportunities arise.
• Support service and outreach missions of the department. Serve on relevant departmental or institutional committees (for example, APP governance, ethics, patient safety committees) as a representative of Radiation Medicine. Participate in community outreach and patient education events to advance public understanding of radiation oncology and support patients and families in the community. Uphold and promote OHSU and departmental values regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in all professional activities.

 

 

Nurse Practioner:

• Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing).
• Current, active Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Oregon (or eligibility for Oregon licensure).
• National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (e.g. AANP or ANCC).

Physician Associate:

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Current national certification by the NCCPA and licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of Oregon (or eligibility for Oregon licensure)

 

Prescriptive Authority (DEA License) 

• Experience in an oncology care setting, preferably focused on radiation oncology or neuro-oncology, is strongly preferred; however, highly qualified new graduates with relevant training will be considered.
• Demonstrated strong clinical skills in patient assessment and critical thinking, including the ability to manage oncologic emergencies and provide compassionate palliative care.
