Department Overview

The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology serves as a beacon of both internationally recognized research and locally delivered advanced clinical care. The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology is a part of the OHSU School of Medicine, with its own admitting service and clinic. We provide all the diagnostic angiographic, interventional radiologic, and neurointerventional services to the OHSU and VA Hospitals.

Function/Duties of Position

The Interventional Neuroradiology APP works collaboratively with physicians, other APPs, and the multidisciplinary care team to provide specialized care for patients undergoing minimally invasive neurovascular procedures. Works in conjunction with the Chair of Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology, Physicians, APPs and Allied Health providers, Department Administration and Operations team, and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the University’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service and the Department’s/Hospital’s goal of providing effective, efficient care. The APP plays a key role in patient assessment, procedural assistance, perioperative management, and follow-up care.

 

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

 

Patient Evaluation & Clinical Care:

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history and physical examinations and obtain informed consent for procedures.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans under the supervision of Interventional Neuroradiologists.
  • Manage pre- and post-procedural care, including patient education and symptom control.

Outpatient Clinic Management & Consultations:

  • Perform initial evaluations and follow-up visits for patients with neurovascular conditions (aneurysms, AVMs, compression fractures).
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, review imaging, and formulate treatment plans in collaboration with Interventional Neuroradiologists.
  • Educate patients and families on conditions, treatment options, and procedural expectations.
  • Coordinate referrals, pre-procedural workups, and long-term follow-up care.

Procedural Support & Perioperative Care:

  • Assist in Interventional Neuroradiology procedures (diagnostic cerebral angiogram, thrombectomy, AVM embolization, spinal interventions – kyphoplasty and radiofrequency ablation/basivertebral nerve ablation, aneurysm treatment – coiling, stenting, embolization).
  • Provide sedation and pain management under institutional protocols.
  • Ensure appropriate pre-procedure screening and optimization, including antiplatelet/anticoagulation management.
  • Monitor patients during and after procedures, identifying and addressing complications.

Inpatient Rounding & Hospital-Based Care:

  • Conduct daily rounds on hospitalized post-procedural patients, performing comprehensive assessments and documentation of findings, progress notes and care plans in the EMR.
  • Adjust treatment/care plans, order necessary imaging/labs, and initiate consults as needed.
  • Collaborate with interventional neuroradiologists, neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care teams to optimize patient care.

Coordination & Collaboration:

  • Act as a liaison between the Interventional Neuroradiology team, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and other specialties.
  • Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care, including scheduling follow-ups and referrals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and treatment planning.

Education & Research:

  • Educate patients and families about procedures, recovery, and long-term management.
  • Train and mentor other healthcare providers, including fellows, residents, medical and nursing students.
  • Contribute to clinical research initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  • Assist with screening and enrollment for hospital-based clinical trials/studies.
  • Attend appropriate hospital conferences and educational opportunities for professional development.

Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, state regulations, and national guidelines for Interventional Neuroradiology care.
  • Participate in departmental/multidisciplinary meetings, quality assurance programs, and continuing education activities.

 

Required Qualifications

Current Physician Assistant license or Nurse Practitioner license through the State of Oregon. Minimum 3 years APP practice experience or, if a new graduate, excellent professional and educational references from director/ instructors of PA program. Conditions of employment require approved credentialing through OHSU and OHSUMG, criminal background check and drug test. Chair of Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology will set the general pattern of working hours, however, deviations from general patterns may be necessary to meet position responsibilities. Duration of this appointment and indicated salary may be changed or eliminated if a gift, grant, or contract fund supporting this position becomes unavailable.
