The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology comprises specialists dedicated to providing the best possible care for patients with cancer and blood disorders. 

Function/Duties of Position

To provide patient care in accordance with allied health privileges granted by OHSU.  The practitioner is under the supervision of the Section Head for Community Oncology and provides patient care consistent with the credentials and the philosophy of the Department of Medicine, University Hospitals and Clinics.

 

Allow for additional provider coverage in our Community Oncology Clinics.  Seeing up to 15 patients a day, address urgent needs and evaluate the patient situation and determine the tolerance of the treatment, review labs, and modify orders as needed.  See new patients in conjunction with attending physician. Write chemotherapy orders when treatment plan has been initiated by attending physician in compliance with credentialed privileges.  Manage patient anticoagulation, as appropriate. Work closely with phone triage staff to manage patient issues and problems and see patients emergently as add-on/walk-ins as appropriate or requested by attending physician. Admits patients to community hospitals as appropriate in collaboration with attending physician. Rounds on patient in community hospitals as requested by attending physician in compliance with community hospital credentialed privileges.

 

 

Clinical Process

  • Clinical Skills/Knowledge
    • Elicits patient history pertinent to current disease status and treatment
    • Performs physical examination
    • Analyzes patient information and laboratory data to form differential diagnoses
    • Formulates plan of care obtaining any additional lab tests or studies, arranging return visits, providing appropriate patient education or referrals/consults for newly identified problems
    • Arranges support services as needed through referrals to Community Oncology Social Worker.
    • Participates in tumor conferences and treatment conferences.
    • Participates in care of patients enrolled in clinical trials.
  •  Emergent Situations
    • Contacts attending physician or site specific physician to discuss emergent situations and plans as appropriate.
    • Recognizes and manages unusual or untoward reactions to conditioning or chemotherapy regimens and contacts attending physician as appropriate.
  •  Patient Education
    • Provides education for patients about their disease, treatment and potential complications
    • Discusses risks/benefits when prescribing medications or treatments.
  •  On-Call Duties
    • Only as back-up for attending physician during weekdays.
  •  Research
    • Assists in identifying patients eligible for clinical trials
    • Participates in research projects as appropriate
    • Uses research and evidence-based practice in the delivery of quality patient care.

 

Education of Others

  • Participates in the development of patient education tools and programs
  • Provides individualized patient education on aspects of Oncology
  • Assumes responsibility for educating others on aspects of Oncology and hematologic malignancies.
  • Provides student lectures and learning materials as requested.
  • Participates in the teaching of medical students, house staff and fellows

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant:

  • Valid/Current State of Oregon Physician Assistant License, State of Oregon Licensure under Community Oncology MD, required

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Valid State of Oregon Registered Nurse license, current Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon, and State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges required.

 

Required:  BLS Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Recommended minimum of one year experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.  Minimum of 1 year oncology experience
