Department Overview

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. This position serves as course director for the School of Medicine’s Education Scholars Program, a nine month, certificate-type professional development program for health professions educators who wish to build an academic career upon the scholarship of teaching and discovery in medical education. The director will oversee curriculum development and implementation, program evaluation, cohort selection, scholarly projects, and will develop and maintain a database of program outcomes. The director will also develop a vision for a community of practice of current and former ESP graduates to promote collaboration and mentorship. The directors will work with the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, the ESP Advisory Committee, and the Educators Collaborative to align efforts and increase participation and engagement within the School of Medicine.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Oversee the program administration and iterative curriculum revision for the Education Scholars Program (ESP), in collaboration with the ESP Advisory Committee.
  • Lead annual ESP cohort recruitment and selection.
  • Recruit ESP capstone mentors and provide support to mentor families in completing capstone projects and presenting them annually at the Symposium on Educational Excellence.
  • Develop and implement an ESP program evaluation plan and identify outcomes of interest at 1, 3, and 5 years.
  • Participate in SoM committees and task forces related to faculty development, such as the Faculty Development Leaders Committee.
  • Incorporate recruitment and educational strategies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Foster a community of practice for ESP participants, alumni, and faculty and work towards creating a digital space and in-person opportunities for community networking and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Development team on other faculty development opportunities in the education mission.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a doctoral level degree (MD/DO/PhD/EdD or equivalent) and experience in education theory and methods, as well as active involvement in health professions education scholarship.
  • Candidates should be skilled in curriculum development, learner assessment, program administration, evaluation, and education research methodology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in health professions education or research is preferred.
