Department Overview

Nurse-midwifery offers a wide variety of professional career pathways. Nurse-Midwives are known for their evidence-based care that is grounded in affirming the power of women, honoring the normalcy of their lifecycles, and prioritizing compassionate partnerships with women. Beyond pregnancy and childbirth care, services provided by Nurse-Midwives include primary, well-woman gynecology, family planning, fertility, and newborn care during the first 28 days of life.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Activities: Practice that emanates from the School of Nursing is expected to support the teaching and research missions of the School. In the practice environment, teaching occurs concurrently with clinical activities.

 

Specific duties include: Provide supplementary coverage of labor and delivery call when the permanent faculty are ill, in retreat, traveling professionally, on vacation or on leave. The primary expectation is the provision of clinical midwifery services to patients in the faculty practice during both day and night shifts.

 

Scholarly Activities: Development of a program of research is an expectation of this position.

 

Education Activities: Teaching graduate nursing students in the Nurse Midwifery programs. This includes teaching and leadership in program and curriculum development and advising and mentoring of students.

 

Service Activities: These activities include faculty meetings, committee membership, professional activities and other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean or Program Director.

 

Administrative Activities: None. 

 

Other Activities: The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Required Qualifications

Education (Degree dependent on academic program type and rank of position.):

  • Instructor: MSN or equivalent
  • Assistant Professor: PhD/DNP or equivalent

 

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses (Current licensure & certifications could be required depending on position and academic program.):

  • Oregon RN license
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • NRP certification
  • Other: national certification as ACNM/ACC/AMCB

Experience (Experience dependent on academic program type and rank of position.):

  • A minimum of one year of full scope midwifery practice is required;
  • 2 years of clinical practice experience required

  • Applicable law, policies, procedures, positions certifying agencies and agreements related to position, department, or OHSU as a whole.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Please check all that apply):

  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate preferred. A doctorate is required for ranks of Assistant Professor or higher.
