Department Overview

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

 

This position will work with the Orthopaedic Upper Extremity practice providing support to the physicians and coordinating patient care. Provides leadership and guidance in the area of inpatient and outpatient care and clinical support operations for the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation. Works in partnership with faculty physicians to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Works in conjunction with the Department Chair, Department Executive Director and OHSU leadership to provide services to further the University's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service and the Department's/Hospital's goal of providing effective, efficient care. Provides clinical modeling and education to departmental staff and house staff as outlined.

Function/Duties of Position

Provide patient care in the outpatient area for pre-operative and post-operative care and chronic follow up as determined by the attending physicians. This includes, but is not limited to: developing patient care plans with the Orthopaedic Upper Extremity surgeons, physicians, and residents to ensure continuity of care and enhance quality of Orthopaedic outpatient care; acting as a resource for application of casts as needed to ensure excellent patient care and ensure smooth patient flow during outpatient clinic sessions; managing health care & wound care during acute and chronic phases of Orthopaedic care; preoperative evaluations; coordination of ancillary services, such as radiology; promoting and maintaining health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with Orthopaedic outpatient staff and other departmental Physician Assistants; promoting a safe environment for patients and adhering to policies regarding patient care and confidentiality to support the mission and goals of OHSU; recognizing emergency or urgent situations and acting immediately and effectively to provide emergency resuscitation and/or treatment; acting as a resource for patient education materials for patients and families; consulting with the Chairman or other faculty to provide up-to-date injury-specific health care information to outpatients; providing high quality customer service to both external and internal customers (patients, referring providers, insurance carriers, internal providers, and other OHSU faculty and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards for the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, use of available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexibility in coverage of internal service needs, and continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.

 

Provides inpatient care and follow-up of assigned patients from OR to admission and through discharge. Includes, but is not limited to: surgical assist in the OR as needed; developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for Orthopaedic inpatients with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; Participation in orthopedic immediate care clinics as needed; providing clinical care through digital telehealth visits; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient service, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for Orthopaedic inpatients and to address length of stay issues; promoting and maintaining health of Orthopaedic inpatients through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing resident and intern training/education in casting techniques and in utilization of plans of care to improve patient services and outcomes of treatment; providing and/or participating in clinical in-service training and staff educational programs for the inpatient Orthopaedic service; following all customer service standards as outlined above. Clinical work may occur at the OHSU waterfront location CHH1, OHSU Beaverton or at partner sites.

 

Administer clinical research protocols and maintain patient database.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Physician Assistant license and registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant.
  • Prescriptive Authority (DEA License).
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Excellent communication skills, leadership ability, professional demeanor and excellent organizational skills.
  • Skilled in organizational behavior and human resources management.
  • Ability to Multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to work as team member in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrate effective communications in verbal, written and electronic media.
  • Computer/word processing skills.
