Department Overview

The Knight Cancer Institue (KCI) envisions a world freed from the burden of cancer by working together to make bold advances in understanding cancer biology, detection, treatment and survival. The Biostatistics Shared Resource (BSR) is one of several OHSU resources supported by the Knight Cancer Institute's National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant. The BSR strives to enhance the quality and rigor of cancer research through professional consultation and collaboration with Knight Cancer Investigators during all phases of the research life-cycle. The primary aim of the BSR is to provide comprehensive and integrated biostatistics support to basic, clinical and population science researchers conducting cancer research at OHSU.

The primary mission of the Division of Oncological Sciences (DOS) is discovery-based oncology research. DOS research also spans the translational landscape to reduce the burden of disease across the cancer continuum.  Importantly, DOS forms a critical nexus for researchers advancing the mission of eradicating cancer, the OHSU clinical enterprise and the broader population we serve. The Knight works in a collaborative and team-based environment to advance innovative discovery-based oncology research and, importantly, inspire and prepare the future workforce to eliminate the burden of cancer.  As the research and educational branch of Knight, DOS is highly integrated with innovative patient-oriented Knight focus areas and population science approaches. Through a better understanding of how cancer initiates, progresses and invades, new strategies will be developed to prevent, detect and treat this disease. A foremost priority is to experimentally decipher transitions from normal to cancer, cancer to metastasis and metastasis to resistance. Translation of our findings will be facilitated through our high risk clinics, unique clinical trials, a Technology Accelerator and a robust program in medicinal chemistry and preclinical development to find new therapies to help our patients and enable new start-up ventures. Additional efforts aim to better understand the unique factors that contribute to cancer prevention and control within populations, particularly those at risk for cancer health disparities. Translation of these findings to develop, deploy and implement interventions in clinical and community practice can advance healthcare systems, policies and public health.
